Albinobeach

by John on May 14, 2010

Albinobeach is an underappreciated band hailing from South Africa. The band plays a style of instrumental post-rock that has a very cosmic atmosphere to it. The band has only released a single EP that runs for about 20 minutes since their inception but there are rumors that there is an album forthcoming this year. As the boys had some time in studio late last year in ‘09 these rumors are far from unreasonable. Check ‘em out and keep your eyes peeled for more news.

Sink To See – Indie Rock

by O-Snaps on May 13, 2010

The indie rock outfit Sink to See began with two art school students, Jason Napier (vocals, guitar) and Dony West (vocals, guitar), who met in Columbus, OH. In January 2001, the duo headed to California and met bass player Shawn Bathe. Soon after, percussionist Josh Chilton joined the lineup and rounded out the group. Sink to See has since made appearances on Los Angeles radio station KROQ and MTV, as well as opening for bands such as IMA Robot, the Violent Femmes, and Sugarcult. Sink to See released their debut EP in February 2008. ~ Katherine Fulton, All Music Guide

NerVer

by O-Snaps on May 13, 2010

NerVer is a hard rock/modern rock band based in Orlando, FL that’s all about groove, attitude, and intensity. Blending a mix of hard hitting drums, grooving bass lines, heavy riffing guitars, and in your face vocals, NerVer sets itself apart by not trying to be the next anybody, just who we are – warts and all. The first single “No Cage” shows all these traits in a radio friendly package that has already proven itself with wins over rock chart toppers Skillet and Adelitas Way in the Band 2 Band Combat on Clear Channel’s The Edge in Little Rock, a number 1 and 2 top ten’s on Ourstage.com, and being added into regular rotation on Jango by volume of positive responses in under a week. Now finishing their upcoming record “twelve twenty one twenty twelve” through Old Groove Productions, NerVer has begun establishing itself as a band to watch… and listen to.

The band’s story officially began in 2004 when founder Casey
Daniel had an abundance of material that didn’t fit with his current
gig, as an original member of the rock band Seven Mary Three,
which he wanted to be heard. After doing some demos in his
studio, Casey met up with drummer Nate Yant in late 2004 who
instantly heard the potential in the music, jumped behind the kit,
and in late 2005 got NerVer a deal with S.K.Y. Records.
Unfortunately, S.K.Y. Records would close before the record
could be released, but that experience led to Casey turning his
studio into a full fledged production facility. In early 2009, now
armed with experience, gear, and knowledge, Casey and Nate
knew it was the time to get NerVer done right and out to the
public. NerVer has filled out the lineup with ripper Cody Mac on
guitar, and is eager to find out where the next step of this journey
will take us. The first single No Cage has gone out to rock stations
across the country, and is available as a 3 song single on iTunes.
Check our radio page for stations and request lines to call and
support NerVer. That’s our story so far, the rest is where we go
together…

Lusine: Two Dots

by d.butz on May 10, 2010

Alright, so this song’s been out for a minute. The thing is, “Two Dots” is so clearly deserving of more than what’s been written about it that I feel it is my duty to pay homage. This is electronica at its most lush and masterfully textured. The rare breed of track that would have found me happily forking out $12 at a record store to buy the entire album for just one song in the pre-mp3 era.  This is not to say that the remainder of Lusine’s album, “A Certain Distance,” is not worthwhile; it is. It’s just that “Two Dots” stands out as the record’s crowning moment, with its haunting vocals, warm synths, and necessarily understated drums that yield to the gorgeous melodies. At once melancholy and exhilarating, it is a song that elicits a myriad of emotions and has me humming it in my head while I usher myself off to dreams of dots, triangles, and the like. And just in case you don’t want to be up all night trying to decipher the lyrics, here they are:

Two dots
joined by a line
might be detached
by a crime
who is responsible
when the line is stretched
who is responsible
when it becomes a triangle
how irresponsible
when the line is stretched
how irresponsible
when it becomes a triangle

Artist Spotlight – Kawnar

by O-Snaps on April 27, 2010

So Recently  I got the opportunity to catch up with Kawnar who is a musician based out of Tulsa, OK.  Kawnar has been in the Tulsa Music Scene for several years and has received a bunch of notable mentions in the press.  Most recently Kawnar was the first runner up for the Lost Theme Song contest held at Comic Con 09, You can download a copy of that song here.  Kawnar also allowed us some exclusive Leaks for his album BDFFRNT!,  Timeless Sync* and Heartbreaker , which you can download by clicking the track title.

Check out what Kawnar had to say below

Kawnar BDFFRNT

WYDURock: What’s up Kawnar, Since this is your first interview with WYDURock, why not give yourself a little introduction and tell the folks about yourself.

Kawnar: I’m pretty much a rapper, with a guitar who tries really hard to sing. But fails at it. I’m the most amazing person in the world. That is if the world consists of who is in this room right now. (it’s just my cat gryffin. He sucks)

WYDURock: So pretty much you’re like a one man band who wishes he didn’t have a microphone?

Kawnar: haha. Wouldn’t say I wish I didn’t have a microphone. I just enjoy instruments. I get bored easily and instruments tend to keep my attention longer in music

WYDURock: For as long as I have been tuned into the Tulsa Music Scene, I have been hearing stuff from you, tell me a little about your history and how you got into creating music.

Kawnar: I really don’t remember (too many drugs (ok maybe not (I’ve never actually tried drugs (but I have tried parentheses)))) I started when I was 8 I think. I used to try really hard mimicking the rappers on TV. Before rap I loved country, yet I can’t stand that genre today. So that probably explains why my music is weird. Being that I have gone through phases of different music that I listen to. Got into hip hop seriously when I was 14. Started doing shows when 16. Picked up the guitar at 18. Won my first award at 20. Good things happen every 2 years. Hopefully next year is a good year. (I’m 21)

WYDURock: Did you have a specific Musician that you looked up to in the Sub 14 years of age? Did your influences change after 14?

Kawnar: I wouldn’t say I looked up to any “musicians” as everyone I looked up to just did vocals. Umm. Michael Jackson was big growing up. As far as rap went it was Twista pre 14 and tech n9ne post 14. Once I was around 17/18 I started listening alot to Jamiroquai. That band really changed music for me.

WYDURock: Was there a concept behind the BEDFFRNT album? Maybe a better question is how is it DFFRNT?

Kawnar: it started with me making songs for a Disney movie. They needed to be really “poppy”. I came up with “heartbreaker” and “timeless sync”. Being that these songs where completley out of the norm for me. I decided I was going to make an ep so these songs wouldn’t just sit in my hard drive and no one hears them. As far as the spelling it’s just different without any vowels. So it’s a different way of spelling different. Haha. The title is just a statement I believe in, it’s not saying that I feel this music is different than what you hear on the radio. It’s different for me. It’s my version of the radio. I feel everyone should try to be dffrnt. :)

WYDURock: I have been fortunate enough to be able to receive copies of various mixes of your new album BEDFFRNT.  From the previous mix I received to this final one there seems to be quite a bit of changes, what prompted the mix to change so drastically ?

Kawnar: It was just me being picky. I did re-record a couple parts to kind of bring each track to it’s height. The focus group I did helped me determine what needed to be changed. Especially with GO#”. The track sounded okay. But it missed performance. So after I re recorded parts I made it sound pretty good. Spent plenty hours on the production side because the lyrics on the song really meant a lot to me.

WYDURock: Shouldnt the track be named #Go? #Justsayin, hahah.

Kawnar: Haha. That title came about in a weird way. The working title of that song while I was making it was G# (G Sharp) just so I could remember what the first note was. And I could never come up with a better title, so I just added an “O” so it would actually make a word. hahahaha!

BDFFRNT! Track Listing

WYDURock: Well I can’t necessarily say picky is a bad thing, but it’s nice to see independent artists using “focus groups” to enhance their final product. Have you decided on a release date for BEDFFRNT ?

Kawnar: Yeah focus groups are good for getting a solid idea where you are going. The release date was simply just timing. It’s been done for a while. But releasing it in June gives me time to promote.

WYDURock:  Do you have an official Release date yet? Where will this album be available for purchase?

Kawnar: I dont have an OFFICIAL release date.. it will be early june.. and then my release party is june 18th at the legendary Cains Ballroom in Tulsa, OK. The album itself can be purchased on most of the online outlets. like iTunes.

WYDURock: Are you going to have any hard copies pressed up? Also what can the readers expect to pay for BDFFRNT?

Kawnar: Yeah I already have the hard copies, they look GREAT! they shall cost $5 at shows and such. Digital downloads can be found around that area as well. They hit iTunes on JUNE 2nd. I’m putting together this little “thing” where everyone will download them at the same time so I can hopefully reach the top charts on iTunes! so JUNE 2nd at 7pm.. make sure you show some love! :P

WYDURock: Call me a Twitter Stalker but I thought I heard you mention something about a video for this album, is that in the works? If so when will it be coming out?

Kawnar: haha yeah. :) we are editing “Sheep” right now.. it’s coming along alright. it’s a very basic video just me and my guitar with a couple cool effects shot.. its just very bright and pretty. I dont know when its going to come out due to time restraints. Me and the directo can never find time to get together.. I only can work on that stuff during the days and thats the time when he sleeps.. so its tough to meet up.. haha. I imagine it will be late june. :)

WYDURock: Well I cant wait to take a look at the video, you have any final thoughts for the readers?

Kawnar: I just appreciate anyone who listens to me, even if you steal it and give the music to all your friends. It truly means a lot for people to even care! I mean thats the one thing I want more than anything from music, is for people just to care about it. :)

Stoner Music – 4/20

by John on April 20, 2010

While I don’t smoke myself (nor do I necessarily encourage anyone else to do so), here is some material that stoners may enjoy in semi-honor of 4/20, from stoner and psychedelic to drug anthems here you are:

Though they are unquestionably mainstream, it would be a great injustice to disinclude Black Sabbath from mention when they have such an unabashed and obvious ode to weed as “Sweet Leaf”.  In the words of Ozzy: “ALRIGHT NOW! Won’t you listen?”

Black Sabbath – “Sweet Leaf”

Colour Haze is a stoner/psychedelic rock band based in Munich, Germany.  They generally create a very relaxing soundscape in which it is quite easy to lose yourself sober or otherwise.

Colour Haze – “Mountain”

Sunn O))) (pronounced: sun) is not a stoner band, rather they are a drone doom band.  However, it seems that massive lumbering primal music like doom may sound even better stoned.  Sunn O))) utilize long held, bowel wrenching drone notes, chanting, and occasional spoken vocals in the creation of their music.  It is an exercise in minimalism proper and yet this New York two piece manages to create atmospheres that are almost unbelievably oppressive and dark as well as those that are relaxing.  While Big Church is more an example of the former atmosphere it has a certain very Zen feeling about it.

Sunn O))) – “Big Church (megszentségteleníthetetlenségeskedéseitekért)”

Hailing from San Diego, California Earthless is another example of stoner/psychedelic rock.  Once again they create relaxing, fluid compositions that seem ever-flowing and in which a listener can find and explore other worlds.

Earthless – “Sonic Prayer”

Frost*

by John on April 13, 2010

Frost* was first formed by Jem Godfrey (a producer/song writer/musician responsible for a number of pop hits prior to forming the band) in 2004 as an outlet for his desire to write progressive music as he had in days passed. In this prog super group of sorts Jem mans the keyboards and vocals, John Mitchell of It Bites plays guitar and contributes vocals, Andy Edwards who has played in IQ performs on drums (though Alex Thomas, who has played with Bolt Thrower and Squarepusher among other bands, has replaced him in the live arena), Nathan King of Level 42 and It Bites performs bass duties, and Declan Burke performs vocals and adds acoustic guitar to the mix. In the band’s relatively short history Frost* has released one live and two studio albums, disbanded, reformed, and done some limited touring with bands such as Dream Theater and Spock’s Beard.

Frost* play a style of progressive rock that is sometimes dubbed neo-prog. Their specific style is frequently emotional and deals with personal struggles and relationships (such as in No Me No You or Saline). Along with the apparent pop sensibilities in their writing they also incorporate many progressive elements and play at a relatively high level of proficiency. Check ‘em out.

Lightning Bolt

by John on April 7, 2010

Noise rock band Lightning Bolt was initially conceived as a trio in Rhode Island back in ‘95.  However, the guitarist/vocalist soon departed the band leaving the group in its current incarnation of Brian Chippendale as drummer/vocalist and Brian Gibson as bassist.

This band creates an extraordinarily dense sound, especially in light of the fact that the only instruments used are drums and bass and in fact, without knowledge of the line-up it is not absurd to mistake the bass for a guitar in some instances.  The duo has released five albums since their inception.  2003’s Wonderful Rainbow is likely the best starting point for the uninitiated as it is generally considered to be their most accessible work.

Lightning Bolt has a known tendency to play their set in the audience surrounded by concert attendees rather than on stage.  Currently, Lightning Bolt has announced almost two dozen gigs which they intend to play later this year, the earliest of which is at the end of this month.  Tour dates below:
